What NFT Marketplaces Are
An NFT marketplace is a platform where non-fungible tokens are listed, bought, sold, and traded. NFT marketplaces serve the same function as stock exchanges or real estate listing platforms in traditional markets: they bring together buyers and sellers, provide price discovery, and facilitate the settlement of transactions. The key difference is that NFT marketplace transactions settle on-chain using smart contracts, making the transfer of ownership transparent and permanent without requiring a trusted intermediary.
NFT marketplaces operate primarily on Ethereum (where the largest NFT collections originated), Solana (which became significant for high-throughput low-fee NFT trading), and various Layer 2 networks as gas costs drove activity away from Ethereum mainnet. Each blockchain has its own dominant marketplace infrastructure, and NFTs from one chain cannot typically be traded on marketplaces designed for another chain without bridging.
The NFT marketplace landscape has evolved considerably since the early 2021 bull cycle. OpenSea, once the dominant marketplace with minimal competition, now competes with Blur (which captured significant market share by targeting professional traders with sophisticated tools), Magic Eden (originally dominant on Solana, now multi-chain), and several others. OpenSea
OpenSea launched in 2017 and became the dominant NFT marketplace during the 2021 NFT bull cycle. At its peak, OpenSea processed billions of dollars in monthly volume and was the primary venue for buying and selling Ethereum NFTs across collections including CryptoPunks, Bored Ape Yacht Club, and thousands of smaller projects.
OpenSea operates as a non-custodial marketplace: NFTs remain in your wallet until a sale is completed, at which point the smart contract transfers the NFT to the buyer and payment to the seller atomically. OpenSea charges a platform fee (historically 2.5%, reduced competitively over time) on each sale plus any creator royalties set by the collection smart contract.
OpenSea has faced significant competition from Blur since 2022. Blur offered zero platform fees, faster interfaces, and professional trading tools including bulk buying, sweeping floor prices, and advanced order management. The competitive pressure forced OpenSea to reduce its own fees and improve its interface. Blur
Blur launched in October 2022 with a focus on professional NFT traders rather than retail collectors. Key features that differentiated Blur from OpenSea: zero marketplace fees (at launch), a token incentive program that rewarded listing and trading activity with BLUR governance tokens, advanced order book-style interfaces, bulk buying and listing tools, and real-time market data analytics.
The BLUR token airdrop strategy proved highly effective at capturing market share. Traders who listed NFTs on Blur and conducted high volumes of trading accumulated BLUR token allocations. This created strong incentives for professional traders to migrate activity from OpenSea to Blur. By 2023, Blur had surpassed OpenSea in daily trading volume for Ethereum NFTs, though OpenSea maintained broader collection coverage and retained retail collectors.
The Blur model highlighted a tension in NFT marketplace design: zero-fee professional trading tools attract volume but may undermine NFT creator royalties. The Solana network offered dramatically lower transaction costs than Ethereum mainnet, enabling a different type of NFT market: high-frequency trading of lower-priced collections that would be uneconomical on Ethereum due to gas costs.
Magic Eden subsequently expanded to Ethereum, Bitcoin (Ordinals and BRC-20), and other chains, positioning itself as a multi-chain NFT marketplace. The expansion strategy reflects the competitive pressure in the NFT marketplace space: as Solana NFT volumes fluctuated with the broader market, multi-chain coverage provided diversification. How to Buy an NFT on a Marketplace
Buying an NFT requires a compatible non-custodial wallet (MetaMask for Ethereum, Phantom for Solana), the native network token for gas fees, and the currency the NFT is priced in (typically ETH on Ethereum or SOL on Solana). The purchase flow on most marketplaces follows the same sequence: connect wallet, browse or search for the collection, select the specific NFT or buy the floor (cheapest listed item), review the price and gas fee estimate, approve the transaction in the wallet.
Before buying, reviewing the collection contract address to confirm you are looking at the genuine collection (not an imitation) is important. How to Sell an NFT
