Phantom Wallet is the most widely used non-custodial wallet for the Solana ecosystem. Whether you are setting it up for DeFi, NFTs, or simply holding SOL, a correct setup process is essential for both security and functionality. This guide covers the complete setup process for Phantom as a browser extension and mobile app, including how to secure your seed phrase, fund your wallet with SOL, and connect to Solana applications.
This is the single most important precaution in the setup process. Phantom has been extensively targeted by phishing sites that create convincing fake versions of the Phantom website. Never search for “Phantom Wallet download” in a search engine and click the first result: paid advertisements have been used to promote fake Phantom sites. Always go directly to phantom.app and download from there, or install from the verified Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons listing with the publisher “Phantom.” On mobile, download from the official Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Verify the developer name is “Phantom” before installing. Our guide on fake wallet apps and extensions details the tactics used in these scams.
After installing Phantom, select “Create a New Wallet.” Phantom will generate a 12-word seed phrase unique to your wallet. Before you see it, Phantom asks you to confirm you understand the importance of keeping it safe. Take this seriously. Write each word, in order, on paper. Use a pen, not a pencil. Do not photograph it. Do not type it into your phone or computer. Do not store it in a cloud service or note-taking app. The seed phrase is the only way to restore your wallet if your device is lost, damaged, or your browser data is cleared. Our seed phrase storage guide explains the safest storage options in detail.
Phantom requires you to verify your seed phrase immediately after writing it down, by selecting the words in the correct order. This step exists to ensure you have accurately recorded the phrase. Do not proceed by guessing or clicking through quickly. If you cannot accurately complete the verification, start over rather than proceeding with a potentially incorrect backup. A wallet backed up with incorrect seed words is, in effect, a wallet with no backup at all.
Create a strong, unique password to protect your Phantom extension or app. This password encrypts your wallet data on your device and is required to unlock Phantom after it has been locked. It is not a substitute for your seed phrase: the password only unlocks the wallet on the current device. If you clear your browser data, reinstall Phantom, or get a new device, you will need your seed phrase to restore access. Your Phantom password should be different from your exchange passwords and other account passwords. For mobile Phantom, enable biometric authentication as an additional layer of protection.
To use Phantom for any Solana transaction, including staking, NFT purchases, or DeFi interactions, you need SOL in your wallet. SOL is the native token of the Solana blockchain, used to pay transaction fees. You can obtain SOL by purchasing it on a centralised exchange such as CoinSpot, Swyftx, or Binance, then transferring it to your Phantom wallet address. Your Phantom Solana address is displayed by tapping your wallet name at the top of the Phantom interface. Copy the address carefully, always send a small test amount first, and confirm the transaction was received before sending larger amounts. Always verify you are sending SOL to the Solana network address, not the Ethereum address format.
Phantom’s main interface shows your SOL balance and other Solana-based assets. The bottom navigation provides tabs for your portfolio, activity history, the built-in swap, and access to apps. The swap feature connects to Jupiter liquidity aggregator for competitive prices when exchanging Solana tokens. The NFT section displays your Solana NFT collection. The staking feature allows you to delegate SOL to Solana validators directly from the interface. Take time to familiarise yourself with the interface before engaging in DeFi or other advanced interactions.
When you visit a Solana-based application, such as a DEX, lending protocol, or NFT marketplace, look for the “Connect Wallet” button and select Phantom. Phantom will prompt you to approve the connection. Approving a connection only allows the site to see your wallet address and request transactions: it does not grant spending permission automatically. Each individual transaction requires your explicit approval within Phantom. Always read transaction details before approving, particularly when interacting with new protocols. Phantom’s built-in transaction simulation for many interactions will warn you if a transaction appears unusual.
If you already have a Solana wallet from another application and want to import it into Phantom, select “I already have a wallet” during initial setup and choose “Import from Secret Recovery Phrase.” Enter your 12 or 24-word seed phrase carefully, ensuring each word is spelled correctly and entered in the correct order. Our dedicated guide on importing a wallet using a seed phrase covers the import process with important security precautions to observe.
Phantom is available both as a browser extension and a mobile app, and both versions are generated from the same seed phrase. You can use the same wallet on both platforms simultaneously. The browser extension is better suited for desktop DeFi interactions and development, while the mobile app is convenient for day-to-day transactions and portfolio checking. Both share the same seed phrase, so a single secure backup covers both. For longer-term storage of significant SOL holdings, consider connecting Phantom to a Ledger hardware wallet for cold storage security, which allows you to use the Phantom interface while keeping your private keys offline.
Setting up Phantom Wallet safely means downloading from phantom.app or verified app stores only, recording your seed phrase on paper offline, verifying the backup before proceeding, and never entering your seed phrase into any website. Fund your wallet with SOL from a legitimate exchange like CoinSpot or Swyftx by sending to your Phantom Solana address. Always send a test transaction first.
